What Are the Cleaning Habits That You Should Teach Kids?

Teaching kids the importance of cleanliness and proper hygiene habits is one of the most important things you can do as a parent. By instilling these values early on, you can help your children develop healthy habits that will last a lifetime.

Creating Cleaning Habits with Preschool Age

At this age, children are inquisitive, and they make a lot of messes. However, they also tend to imitate everything you do, which you can use as an advantage. If they see you clean and become interested, you can take this opportunity to teach them and allow them to help you with your daily chores.

It is essential to be consistent when teaching your child to do household chores. This is especially true for preschoolers who thrive on routine. When you introduce a cleaning task to them, ensure to repeat it until they get the hang of it continuously.

Some of the cleaning tasks you can teach them include:

  • Placing dirty clothes in the laundry basket
  • Putting away toys
  • Helping you fold clean clothes
  • Throwing away trash into the trash bin
  • Placing used cups and dishes in the sink

Parents should start teaching their children how to do household chores at a young age. Not only will this create a strong foundation for them to learn to appreciate and do some cleaning as they grow older, but it will also help develop their hand-eye coordination, muscle growth, and balance.

Creating Cleaning Habits with Young Children

School children are at an age where they are constantly growing and changing. They can be sweet and innocent one minute and then test your patience the next. It is important to remember that they are still learning and growing and will make mistakes along the way.

It’s important to start teaching your kids about responsibility early on by assigning them household chores. This will help them develop good habits and learn to contribute to the family.

Some of the chores you can assign include:

  • Making their bed
  • Putting away their toys
  • Taking out the trash
  • Organizing their belongings
  • Washing their dishes
  • Helping you fold or hang clothes
  • Helping you tidy up the living room or kitchen

As your children grow older, you can gradually start giving them more challenging chores around the house. If you have been doing this since they were younger, they will be able to take on these tasks efficiently.

Creating Cleaning Habits with Teens

A lot of body changes accompany the teenage years. For girls they’re experiencing puberty and all the changes that come with it. For boys they’re going through a growth spurt, and their voices are changing. These changes can be overwhelming, which is why teenagers sometimes withdraw from social activities or act out.

Knowing when to give your children space to do things independently and when to make sure they complete their assigned chores around the house can be challenging. However, as a parent, it is crucial to find this balance.

Here are some of the chores you can have them do to cultivate cleaning habits.

  • Cleaning their rooms
  • Wiping down surfaces
  • Ching their pillowcases and bedsheets
  • Sweeping the floor
  • Vacuuming the floor

It is important to remember that you should not allow your children to use tools or equipment by themselves. You should always be there to supervise them.

Conclusion

It’s never too late or early, to get the little ones involved in helping out with chores around the house. Even if it’s just simple tasks like putting away their toys or helping to make the bed, teaching children healthy cleaning habits from a young age can go a long way in making your life as a parent just that much easier.
