Dusting—A Short Guide on How Often You Should Do it

Dust accumulates dirt and dead skin cells that settle on furniture, blowing in from the air. At first, it goes unnoticed because everyone is too busy cleaning other surfaces. Then, suddenly, the dust accumulates and is easier to spot. Once this happens, we will need to throw out that old duster and buy a new one.

First and foremost, dusting is important because it helps maintain the appearance of your home. You want the place you live to look nice and presentable, especially when you have guests over or when you want to take pictures to post online. Dusting can also help you spot any signs of pests or damage.

But did you also know that dusting is also important to your health? Yes, it is! Did you know that dust and other allergens can aggravate allergies? In fact, according to reputable studies, having a thick layer of dust on your furniture and windows can cause a significant amount of harm.

In this article, let’s explore how often you should be dusting your home. Here’s what you need to know:

How Often Should People Dust?

The amount of dust that accumulates in your home depends on many factors—the most important being how often you do it. For example, if you dust your home each week after cleaning it, you won’t have much of a dust problem. But if you wait a month or two, dust will pile up, and you’ll need to deal with a much bigger problem.

So how often should you dust? It depends on the number of people living in your home, the size of your home, and how much dust your home naturally attracts. Here are a few examples of the frequency you should dust your home:

  • If you have a small home around 1000 square feet, you should dust it once a week.
  • If you have a medium home around 1500 square feet, you should dust it once every two weeks.
  • If you have a large home around 2000 square feet, you should dust it once every month.

And so on and so forth.

How to Dust Effectively

You should know a few things about dusting, so let’s explore them in this section. Dusting can be hard, but it’s not impossible, and as you know, it’s a crucial aspect of home maintenance.

Don’t be afraid to use a damp cloth. The primary tool you’ll use for dusting is a cloth, and it’s one of the most common ones for this purpose. If you’re using reusable cloth, there’s an opportunity for dust to accumulate on it. So, it’s important that you clean or wash your cloth regularly.

Use the right tools. You won’t have access to all the surfaces when you’re dusting because things are blocking the way. It’s best only to use tools that reach the way you need. The best example is a duster. A duster is a long tool so you can reach far surfaces and corners.

Don’t put too much pressure on your cloth. This can cause more dust to be generated, so it’s best not to put too much pressure on it. Like damp cloths, if you put too much pressure on your cloth, you can cause the dust to blow everywhere and make a bigger mess. If you want to exert more effort, it’s better to use a different cloth.

The Bottom Line

This guide will give you an overview of how often you should clean and dust your home. Keep in mind that dusting is important for your home’s appearance and health, so it’s always good to dust your home regularly.
